Rev. Carl-Mario Sultana’s paper discusses St. George Preca’s dedicated efforts in teaching the catechism in Malta. Recognizing the challenge of undertaking this task alone, Preca initiated a project involving laypeople, a significant feat before Vatican Council II. Despite obstacles, Preca successfully positioned laypeople at the forefront, a development that Vatican Council II echoed years later. The paper aims to illustrate Preca’s pioneering role in promoting the apostolate of the laity. It explores how he not only acknowledged the laity’s right to engage in the apostolate but also united them for a profound mission. Preca’s approach, characterized by obedience to the hierarchy and thorough formation, had a lasting impact on the apostolate.
